Lungo cammino o trekking: come gestire le calze

Long-distance walking or trekking: how to manage your socks

A multi-day trek always begins long before you put on your boots and take that first step: finding the right routes, figuring out how to get to the start and how to get home from the finish, where to stay for the night...

Then the thoughts multiply when it comes to gear: none of us wants to carry a backpack weighing dozens of kilos, full of useless things.

Today, we want to give you some tips on how to manage toe socks for your trip.

Toe socks packaging

1. Bring at least two pairs and alternate them

Why two? If you always wear the same pair, the fibers don't have time to "rest" between hikes: they lose their shape, wear out faster, and retain more moisture, promoting unpleasant odors and bacterial growth. With two pairs, you alternate one day with the other, letting the fabric dry completely. This way, the sock maintains its elasticity and breathability longer, you reduce bad odors, and you extend the life of each pair.

2. Smart washing and drying

  • Wash by hand or on a delicate cycle: it is best to use lukewarm water and a neutral detergent. If using a washing machine, put everything in a delicates bag and avoid aggressive spin cycles.
  • No boiling water or bleach: they can ruin the fibers or weaken the elastomers.
  • Air dry: hang the socks in a ventilated place, away from direct heat sources. If you really must use a dryer, choose the "delicate" or "low heat" setting.

3. Foot care and trimming toenails

New or freshly washed socks cannot protect you from a sharp toenail snagging on the fabric: always keep your nails short and file the edges well. Wash your feet every day, dry them thoroughly (including between your toes), and, if necessary, use a little talcum powder or antifungal powder to keep the inside of the sock dry and prevent blisters.

4. Storage during the trek

Let dirty socks breathe: lay them out or clip them to your backpack to keep them aired out instead of sealing them in a bag.

  • Separate bags: use one compartment for clean socks and one for dirty ones. This prevents moisture and odors from transferring to the rest of your gear.

In summary: two pairs of socks to alternate, careful washing and drying, clean feet, and neatly trimmed nails. This way, you can focus solely on the pleasure of the journey, with your feet safe and your socks always up to the challenge of your adventure. Happy trekking!
